As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Apple TV has officially secured the rights to adapt the “Cosmere,” the expansive and interconnected literary universe created by bestselling author Brandon Sanderson. This move signals Apple’s ambition to build a fantasy franchise that rivals the likes of Game of Thrones or Harry Potter. With over 50 million books sold and a record-breaking $42 million Kickstarter campaign under his belt, Sanderson brings a loyal army of fans.
What makes this deal truly unique is the level of authority granted to the author. Unlike many writers who hand over their work and hope for the best, Sanderson will be the “architect” of the screen universe. He will write, produce, and consult, holding final approval rights—a level of control even J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin haven’t fully enjoyed.
The roadmap for the Cosmere on Apple TV+ is already taking shape with two massive projects. The fan-favorite Mistborn series is being developed as a feature-film franchise, focusing on “Allomancers” who burn metals to gain magical abilities while attempting to topple a dark empire. Simultaneously, The Stormlight Archive—Sanderson’s epic “magnum opus” is being adapted into a prestige television series. Blue Marble, led by Theresa Kang, is already attached to executive produce the series, which follows knights and monsters in a world ravaged by magical tempests.
For those new to Sanderson’s work, the Cosmere is an epic where different worlds are linked by a single creation myth. Long ago, a godlike being named Adonalsium was shattered into 16 shards, each carrying a different type of magic to various planets. This interconnectedness means characters and events from one series often ripple through others.
