Apple’s A20 Pro Could Be a Major Leap in iPhone 18 Pro Performance

Apple’s next-generation silicon could make the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup considerably faster and more efficient.

Apple plans to introduce the A20 Pro alongside its next-generation iPhone models at its September launch event. Supply-chain partners reportedly circulating information suggest the new chip could deliver an 18% performance improvement over the A19 Pro. It would also consume significantly less power.

Details shared by Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital point to two major improvements for the A20 Pro.

Analysts expect the upcoming processor to provide:

  • 30% better power efficiency

If those figures are accurate, Apple’s focus this year may extend beyond simply pushing benchmark numbers higher. A substantial improvement in efficiency could be just as important for iPhone users, particularly when performing demanding tasks for extended periods.

Lower power consumption could help the iPhone maintain performance for longer while also reducing the amount of heat generated by the processor. In practical terms, that could potentially contribute to improved battery endurance and more consistent performance during intensive workloads.

Apple is reportedly moving its iPhone chip to 2nm

We expect the manufacturing technology for producing the A20 Pro to be one of the biggest changes.

TSMC aims to produce Apple’s first smartphone processor using its 2nm node. Moving to a more advanced fabrication process gives Apple additional room to improve transistor density, performance, and energy efficiency.

The real-world gains could be more important than benchmark scores

The 18% increase in overall performance appears impressive, but the final impact depends heavily on where those improvements are delivered.

Apple typically separates its chip improvements into areas such as CPU performance, GPU capabilities, and Neural Engine processing. The company could therefore reveal a very different set of gains across individual components when it officially announces the A20 Pro.
