Apple’s advertising ambitions might be extending into a feature most people wouldn’t expect: Visual Intelligence. As reported by MacRumors via Aaron Perris, code discovered inside iOS 27 points to Apple potentially allowing outside search providers to insert their own sponsored results directly into the tool, rather than Apple handling the ad placements itself.
The setup described in the code would work a bit differently than typical in-app advertising. Instead of Apple selling ad space directly, third-party search providers like Google would be the ones inserting sponsored content, similar to how sponsored product listings already show up on platforms like Amazon or Google itself. Whether Apple would take a cut of that ad revenue isn’t clear from the code alone.
For shopping-related searches, Visual Intelligence presently relies on a handful of outside partners, including Google, Amazon, Etsy, and more. When someone points their camera at an item they want to shop for, the feature pulls in organic results from those services. If this sponsored results system does roll out, it would essentially build sponsored placements on top of a shopping pipeline that already exists, rather than introducing something entirely new to the app.
This potential move fits into a broader pattern for Apple over the past year. The company has been steadily growing its advertising footprint across multiple corners of its ecosystem. App Store search results picked up additional sponsored slots back in March, and Apple Maps started showing ads of its own in the United States and Canada last month. Visual Intelligence would mark a different kind of expansion, though, since it involves outside companies placing their own ads rather than Apple running an internal ad program the way it does with the App Store and Maps.
None of this confirms Apple will actually ship the feature. Code discovered in beta software frequently gets tested internally and scrapped before ever reaching a public release, and there’s no indication yet of a timeline even if Apple does move forward with it. Still, given how aggressively Apple has pushed into advertising elsewhere recently, sponsored results inside Visual Intelligence would fit right in with where the company’s services business already seems to be heading.
