Drivers with cars from three more automakers will soon be able to unlock and start their cars with iPhone or Apple Watch.
MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris spotted code in Apple’s backend referencing Lucid Motors, Lincoln and Chinese automaker Freelander. Officials with Apple had already announced Lucid as an upcoming partner during WWDC 2025, but this is the first time we are seeing it referenced in code.
This follows several other backend leaks this summer indicating support from a growing number of automakers, including MG and Indian brand Mahindra. BMW was the first adopter of the standard, followed by Audi, Volvo, Kia, Hyundai, Genesis and others.
Apple announced digital Car Keys at WWDC 2020 as a way for drivers to lock, unlock and start their supported vehicles, as well as share access with other drivers through iMessage.
This change does not give an idea on when support might be available to customers. It only indicates that work is underway behind-the-scenes. Apple has also yet to confirm which specific vehicles from these brands will be supported.
