Holafly: unlimited data in 33 countries

Holafly’s eSIM for Europe sells unlimited data only, so the choice comes down to trip length rather than gigabytes. The plan covers 33 countries, including the UK and Switzerland, and can be booked for any length from 1 to 90 days: 1 day costs $3.90, 7 days $27.50 and 30 days $76.50.

Hotspot is allowed with up to 1 GB of shareable data per day, and the eSIM connects to 5G where available. Every Holafly eSIM also includes “Always On”, 1 GB of backup data per month at no cost, valid in 150+ countries. Support runs 24/7 through online chat and WhatsApp.

Good fit for: travellers who stream, navigate and video-call all day and would rather not count gigabytes.

Amigo eSIM: 44 destinations and 30-day packages with calls and texts

Amigo eSIM sells its Europe plan in five packages: 1 GB for 7 days at $6, then 6 GB for $13, 12 GB for $20, 18 GB for $26 and 30 GB for $44, each valid for 30 days. The plan’s list counts 44 destinations, from France, Italy and Spain to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

The 6 to 30 GB packages run on the Three network and its roaming partners and are listed as “Data, Minutes and Texts”, with unlimited calls and texts in the package details. Hotspot is listed as unlimited, and extra data can be bought in the Amigo app at any time. The full country list and package details are on Amigo’s eSIM for Europe page.

Good fit for: trips of up to a month across the EU, Switzerland and Norway where calls and texts matter as much as data.

Airalo: 41 countries, from 1 GB to 100 GB or unlimited

Airalo sells its Europe eSIM under the name Eurolink, covering 41 countries including the UK, Switzerland and Turkey. Fixed packages run from 1 GB for 3 days at $5 through 10 GB for 30 days at $31 to 100 GB for 180 days at $185, and six unlimited packages cover 3 to 30 days for $11.50 to $71.

The eSIM can be topped up, and auto-renewal adds a new package when 10% of the data is left. Airalo’s iOS and Android apps showed ratings of 4.7 and 4.6 on its Europe page, and support runs 24/7 in several languages, including chat on WhatsApp.

Good fit for: multi-country routes that include the UK or Turkey, and long stays that need validity of up to 180 days.

Orange Travel: a French number with calls, texts and up to 500 GB

Orange sells its Europe eSIM through Orange Travel, the new name of Orange Holiday Europe, with 39 countries on the list, including the UK and Switzerland. The Data+Calls+SMS plans add a French phone number, unlimited local calls and texts and a bundle of calls and SMS to the rest of the world, from 20 GB for 14 days at $29.99 to 500 GB for 90 days at $119.99. Data-only plans start at 10 GB for 14 days for $19.99.

Every plan includes unlimited hotspot sharing, and the eSIM connects automatically to Orange’s 700+ partner networks. Because the line comes with a French number, Orange asks buyers to register their identity within 30 days, as French law requires.

Good fit for: travellers who want a European number for calls, bookings and texts, along with very large data allowances.

Saily: 35 countries with built-in ad blocking and web protection

Saily’s eSIM for Europe covers 35 countries, including the UK, Switzerland and Turkey. Fixed-data plans run from 1 GB for 7 days at $4.99 to 50 GB for 90 days at $95.99. Unlimited plans of 7 to 30 days cost $26.99 to $71.99, with 5 GB a day at full speed and up to 1 Mbps after that.

The Saily app adds an ad blocker, web protection against malicious sites and trackers, and virtual location. Plans can be topped up in the app, Auto Top-Up renews a plan once it is used up, and chat support is available 24/7. Saily’s apps showed a 4.7 rating on both the App Store and Google Play.

Good fit for: travellers who want ad blocking and web protection built into their data plan, and routes that include Turkey.

Ubigi: 5G in 36 of 38 countries and plans valid for up to a year

Ubigi’s Europe plan lists 38 countries and territories, including the UK (on EE and Three) and Switzerland, and marks 5G as available in 36 of them. The wider Europe Extended plan reaches 56, adding Turkey, Iceland, Serbia, Albania and Georgia, among others.

Prices start at 500 MB for 2 days for $2 and 3 GB for 30 days for $7, and run up to 100 GB for 360 days for $100. Unlimited plans cost $23 for 7 days and $62 for 30 days, and regular visitors can pick annual Europe plans from $24 for 2 GB a month. Hotspot is allowed, and top-ups work in the Ubigi app without Wi-Fi.

Good fit for: frequent visitors to Europe and budget trips that need a small allowance that lasts.

Which Europe eSIM fits your trip

  • A short trip with no data counting: Holafly, or the unlimited plans from Airalo, Orange Travel, Saily and Ubigi.
  • Calls and texts as well as data: Orange Travel’s Data+Calls+SMS plans, with a French number, and Amigo eSIM’s 6 to 30 GB packages.
  • A route that includes the UK or Turkey: the UK is on Holafly, Airalo, Orange Travel, Saily and Ubigi, and Amigo eSIM sells it as a separate plan; Turkey is on Airalo, Saily and Ubigi’s Europe Extended.
  • A month away with a set amount of data: 30-day packages from Ubigi (3 GB for $7), Amigo eSIM (6 GB for $13), Saily (3 GB for $12.49), Airalo (5 GB for $19.50) and Orange Travel (20 GB for $28.99).

When does a Europe eSIM start counting days?

All six start the clock in Europe, not at purchase. Holafly, Airalo, Saily and Ubigi begin the plan when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, and Orange Travel and Amigo eSIM when it is activated at the destination. That leaves time to install the eSIM before the trip; Saily recommends doing so before travelling to Turkey, where access to its app may be limited.

Can I add data if I run out?

Airalo, Saily, Ubigi, Orange Travel and Amigo eSIM all sell top-ups in their apps, and Airalo and Saily can also renew a plan automatically. A top-up on Orange Travel starts a new validity period, so Orange suggests topping up on the plan’s last day. Holafly’s Europe plans are unlimited, and its app offers an “Upgrade my plan” option.
