Apple first introduced the LiDAR sensor with iPad Pro and then moved to ship it with the iPhone 12 Pro Models. According to the latest rumours, Apple plans to expand the LiDAR Sensor to the entire iPhone 13 lineup instead of just the “Pro” Models.

Digitimes has reported that,

“Apple has adopted dToF LiDAR scanner in iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro series, and is expected to apply the scanner technology to all its 2021 iPhone models, which will remain available with face ID sensors, the sources said.”

They have also mentioned that Apple would be leaning back on Sony for the LiDAR Sensor’s components as they have signed a three-year contract with Apple. The report continues,

“Sony, in the supply chain for Apple devices, reportedly has signed a three-year contract with Apple to offer a new-generation near-infrared (NIR) CIS with a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array for dToF LiDAR scanner, indicating that Apple will adopt the scanner in iPhones and other devices through at least 2023.”

The LiDAR Scanner is an important piece of technology as it helps in quickly calculating the distances to an object as it is a system that works on laser-based time-of-flight. The sensor makes it easier to focus on objects in low light condition and has a lot of usage in the Augmented Reality based apps and environment.
