With the upcoming announcement of the iPhone 15 Pro in less than two months, we expect that model to feature a titanium frame and a periscope lens for the first time on an iPhone. Now, a rumor from “Digital Chat Station” claims that next year’s iPhone 16 Pro is going to have another major improvement for its camera system, and that will be a “periscope ultra-long telephoto” lens.

Although the report doesn’t indicate which iPhone 16 model will feature this revamped camera system, it’s likely that the iPhone 16 Pro Max or “Ultra” could have this breakthrough technology first, similar to how the iPhone 12 Pro Max pioneered the sensor-shift lens.

Now what exactly is a “periscope ultra-long telephoto” camera? Simply put, it’s a lens system that allows photographers to get a close-up view of subjects from a very far distance.

For this year’s lineup, we can still expect the iPhone 15 Pro Max to double the zoom range from 3x optical zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s telephoto lens to 6x optical zoom on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope lens. Additionally, the report also claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a larger sensor at 1/1.14 inches that will allow more light as well as improve the overall image quality.

Because we’re still over a year before the iPhone 16 lineup’s announcement, it’s worth mentioning to take this report with a grain of salt as Apple’s plans for bringing this feature could change based on supply chains and mass production.
