It has been reported by DigiTimes that Apple could be making a new low-cost MacBook that is similar in price and design with the Google Chromebooks.
It is predicted that Apple will be releasing a MacBook like this in mid-2024 and have it be centered around the education industry. The company is expected to release it but give it a name and category outside of its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines.
As for what the MacBook would look like, it would be metal but use “different materials,” with those materials supposedly being lower-cost ones.
The Chromebook line of computers have been quite popular in the education sector of the U.S. with almost 20 million of them sold and shipped last year alone.
Additionally, Chromebooks are quite portable, hence why it would make sense for Apple to want to tap into that market and potentially release its own version of a product like that. While the iPad Air and iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard case could be good for some students, both products do run on the more expensive side which it seems Apple is trying to get away from.
This would not be the first time Apple has made a MacBook for education.
The company previously sold in 2006 a Mac line that was previously just called “MacBook” that was originally available in black and white.
By 2009 was only available to be purchased in white when the new version was released.
On top of that, Apple did briefly have the old 12-inch MacBooks that were available in silver, gold, rose gold, and space gray. At the time, those MacBooks were incredibly thin (see featured image above).
