As we enter into the new year, we can still look forward to what Apple has in store for the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup (besides a new additional color for at least the iPhone 15 of course).

According to analyst Jeff Pu, both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature the next-generation A18 chip, instead of the rumored A17 chip, effectively skipping a generation of Apple Silicon for iPhone. This will mark the first time that the standard iPhone models will use a chip that’s built on the newer 3nm process. On the higher end, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature the more capable A18 Pro chip, retaining its Pro moniker first used with the A17 Pro chip.

Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max come with 8GB of RAM; however, that amount of memory will become the standard across the entire iPhone 16 lineup, including the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.

Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will adopt the more advanced Qualcomm X75 modem, which will allow for improved 5G connectivity. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will retain the same Qualcomm X70 model that’s also found across the entire iPhone 15 lineup.

What’s also in line with Ming-Chi Kuo’s report is that both the iPhone 16 Pro models will have a significant boost in megapixels for their Ultra Wide camera (from 12MP to 48MP), which could also see an upgrade in spatial video recording to view with Vision Pro.

Last, but not least, another feature that will make its way to the standard iPhone models from the Pro models is the adoption of Wi-Fi 6E with both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Wi-Fi 6E has become the standard in all the current Macs sans the MacBook Air as well as the latest iPad Pro. Wi-Fi 7 officially launched last week, so Pu also suggests that the next iPhone 16 Pro models “might” feature that improvement in wireless connectivity, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
