iOS 18.1 has been in beta since the end of July and was only available for iPhone 15 Pro models. Yesterday, Apple released the fourth beta of iOS 18.1 to all devices that support iOS 18.0, along with a new feature for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The iPhone 15 Pro series from last year was already capable of recording Spatial videos for playback on the Apple Vision Pro, and Apple is further expanding this by adding support for Spatial Photos, which was introduced as an iPhone 16 feature on September 9th. A new “Spatial” section has been added in the Camera App along with Photo, Video, Cinematic, Time-Lapse, and more. This change helps in organizing the Camera App and results in a deliberate user action to record in the new Spatial format.
However, the video recording is still limited to 1080p at 30fps, even for the latest iPhone 16 Pro models, which is a bit disappointing considering the amazing resolution of the Apple Vision Pro for playback. According to Apple, “Record spatial photos and videos with remarkable depth for viewing in the Photos app on Apple Vision Pro. For best results, keep iPhone in landscape orientation and stable while recording. Video is recorded at 30 fps at 1080p. A minute of spatial video is approximately 130 MB. A spatial photo is approximately 5 MB.”
iOS 18.1 is expected to be released by the end of this year, most likely by next month with features like Apple Intelligence and more, with most of them being available for newer iPhone models such as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 series.
