Apple acquires photo editing company Pixelmator

It has been officially announced by Pixelmator that it has been acquired by Apple, according to its blog.

Pixelmator has been viewed in some cases as an “off-brand” version of Adobe Photoshop.

For a long time, it was seen as a way for photo editors to be a cheaper route for software since Pixelmator used to be a one-time purchase type of app, while Photoshop had a monthly subscription fee attached to it. However, Pixelmator has since made the switch to a subscription-based app and service since 2022.

The company has announced that there will be “no material” adjustments or changes to its apps and that it is still pending regulatory approval. Its apps are Pixelmator, Pixelmator Photo, and Pixelmator Pro. Pixelmator and its apps are available to download on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

However, the folks at Pixelmator did say they were happy about its new acquisition by Apple and what it could lead to.

“We’ve been inspired by Apple since day one, crafting our products with the same razor-sharp focus on design, ease of use, and performance. And looking back, it’s crazy what a small group of dedicated people have been able to achieve over the years from all the way in Vilnius, Lithuania. Now, we’ll have the ability to reach an even wider audience and make an even bigger impact on the lives of creative people around the world.”
