Apple is boosting iPhone production in India, running operations at five plants — two of which have recently opened, as recently reported by Bloomberg. This shift aims to reduce reliance on China, especially for models headed to the US market. For the first time, all four iPhone 17 variants—including the high-end Pro versions will be manufactured in India right from their debut next month.

Apple’s strategy isn’t new, but it’s accelerating. The company has been gradually moving the bulk of US-bound iPhone production from China to India to minimize tariff impacts. This comes as Apple navigates a tricky landscape under the Trump administration, where tariffs on Chinese goods could add costs. The expansion involves major partners like the Tata Group and Foxconn Technology Group. Tata’s new plant in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur and Foxconn’s hub near Bangalore airport are already operational and contributing.

India itself faces 50% US tariffs in some areas, partly due to its purchases of Russian oil. However, iPhones have dodged these so far thanks to exemptions. To keep it that way, CEO Tim Cook pledged this month to invest $600 billion in US operations over four years. Cook has stated that a majority of iPhones sold in the US will come from India, aiming to strengthen ties and secure favorable trade terms.

This India-focused strategy is part of Apple’s long-term vision to make the country a cornerstone of iPhone production. It could mean more stable pricing and supply for consumers, even as trade policies fluctuate.
