Apple TV is preparing to add another gripping title to its movie library. Apple Original Films has picked up “The Flick,” a new thriller based on an unpublished short story by writer Matt Hickey. The project, which comes from the high-pressure world of air traffic control, was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The story sounds like a true white-knuckle experience. It follows an air traffic controller named Sonny Braden, who is already at his breaking point when he receives a terrifying distress call. The pilot of a plane is unconscious, and a panicked, pregnant passenger is now at the controls. With storms closing in and fuel dwindling, Braden must try to talk her through an impossible landing. All the while, he is fighting his own exhaustion, guilt, and an unraveling personal life.
This new film brings together some familiar faces for Apple. Peter Chernin and David Ready will produce for Chernin Entertainment, which is behind several other Apple TV projects. This movie marks one of the first features under Chernin Entertainment’s new first-look deal with Apple, showing a strengthening relationship. The story’s author, Matt Hickey, will also serve as a producer.
If the producers’ names sound familiar, they should. Chernin Entertainment is the production company behind the Jason Momoa-led series “See” ,and “Chief of War.” Hickey also has a history with Apple, having written the Apple Original podcast series “Easy Money: The Charles Ponzi Story.”
