Siri’s Massive Evolution: Inside Apple’s Landmark Deal with Google

Earlier this week, Apple officially pulled back the curtain on a massive multi-year partnership that will see Gemini models from Google become the primary engine behind Apple Intelligence and a completely reimagined Siri. A deep-dive report from The Information sheds more light on this deal.

With Gemini’s reasoning capabilities, Siri is moving away from simply providing web links for factual queries. Instead, the assistant will offer conversational answers with cited sources, similar to how we interact with advanced chatbots today. Apple is reportedly focusing on two major areas:

  • Emotional Support: Siri will soon be able to handle sensitive conversations, providing thoughtful, conversational responses when users express feelings like loneliness or frustration.

  • Contextual Intelligence: By searching through your messages, Siri can now figure out personal relationships. If you ask to “text my sister,” Siri can identify who that is by analyzing your conversation history, even if they aren’t labeled in your contacts.

While Google is providing the “brain,” Apple is providing the “body.” The Gemini-based AI will run either directly on your device or via Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system. To maintain its strict privacy pledge, Apple is using its own custom server chips to process complex requests rather than routing them through Google’s servers. Interestingly, early prototypes show that Siri’s responses contain no Google or Gemini branding. Apple also retains the power to “fine-tune” how the model behaves, ensuring it speaks with the “voice” and values of Apple.

The rollout will be gradual. We expect to see the first wave of Gemini-powered features arrive this spring, potentially with iOS 26.4. More proactive features—like Siri remembering past conversations or suggesting travel times based on your calendar—are slated for a full unveiling at WWDC 2026 in June.
