Apple CEO Tim Cook has joined a growing chorus of business leaders expressing deep concern over the recent fatal shootings in Minneapolis. In an internal memo sent to employees on Tuesday, Cook stated he is “heartbroken” by the tragic events involving federal agents. He emphasized that the current situation in the city calls for immediate de-escalation, as reported by Bloomberg.

The memo follows the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. Pretti was killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent on Saturday during a confrontation amid a broader immigration crackdown. This marks the second fatal shooting of a civilian by federal agents in the city this month, sparking intense public outcry and protests across the nation.

In his message to the Apple team, Cook underscored the importance of adhering to the nation’s foundational values. “I believe America is strongest when we live up to our highest ideals,” Cook wrote. He advocated for treating every individual with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or origin. He praised the Apple workforce for their deep care for the world, calling their empathy one of the company’s “greatest strengths.”

Cook revealed that he has been in direct contact with President Donald Trump. The CEO shared his views on the Minneapolis situation with the President earlier this week. Cook noted that he appreciated the President’s “openness to engaging” on these critical issues that affect the community at large.

The White House has already begun making adjustments in response to the unrest. President Trump announced a leadership shuffle in the state’s deportation efforts, appointing border czar Tom Homan to oversee operations.
