While Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is set to kick off in a week, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that iOS 28 will be a more significant update than the one being announced this year. Here’s what we know so far.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says that next year’s ‘28’ update is “shaping up to be far more significant than the’ 27 ‘updates.” Highlighting that Apple has already begun work on the next major update, internally known as Bell, he adds that developers are “at the point where they’re developing individual features, new apps, designs, and enhancements, but have not yet pulled everything together into the operating systems.”

More importantly, iOS 28 will power the rumored 20th Anniversary iPhone next year. “The stakes are high for next year’s releases,” says Gurman. If Apple revisits the iPhone X, then expect them to pull out all the stops for this halo device.

Gurman says that iOS 27 is expected to “put a new Siri app front and center” of their Siri AI reboot plan. In addition, next week we should see Apple announce a more personalized Siri experience, with on-screen awareness and improved contextual awareness.

Gurman adds that “people within the company are comparing the experience to Google’s Gemini app. The main page has a grid or list of active conversations, while the chat view allows text, audio, and attachment input — like any other modern chatbot. I’m told there is one additional feature that is on par with current offerings: synced conversations across devices. In Apple’s case, this will be through iCloud.”

With the announcement of iOS 27, Apple is also expected to discontinue support for older devices, including A13 Bionic-powered models such as the iPhone SE (2nd Generation) and iPhone 11. Likely due to the 4 GB of RAM (3 GB on the SE (2nd Generation)) limitation affecting AI features. Stay tuned for our WWDC coverage next week.
