New firmware versions for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 (Lightning and USB-C), and Beats Studio Buds have been released by Apple. The build number of the new AirPods firmware is 8B41, with it previously being 8B40 for the AirPods Pro 3 and 8B39 for the AirPods Pro 2. The build number for the Beats Studio Buds update is 1B211.
Apple hasn’t revealed if there’s anything new with these versions, as the release notes just mention “bug fixes and improvements” on Apple’s AirPods firmware update webpage. However, Apple addressed a security vulnerability involving Bluetooth on the Beats firmware update. According to Apple, “An attacker within Bluetooth range may be able to listen through the microphone of a device which is not yet paired and actively seeking pair requests”
If you want to check if your AirPods/Beats model has updated to the latest firmware, follow these steps:
- Open the lid of your AirPods/Beats or wear them
- Go to Settings>Bluetooth
- Tap on the ‘i’ icon
- Scroll down to find the version number.
Or go to Settings> AirPods/Beats section at the top> scroll down to find the version.
Here, you’ll be able to see the current firmware version of your AirPods/Beats. If it hasn’t updated, you’ll just have to wait, as there’s no way to manually update. Just make sure your AirPods/Beats case is sufficiently charged, along with your iPhone being in close proximity.
A quicker method, which might work, is to connect your AirPods case to a Mac with a cable, with AirPods themselves in the case. The same applies to other accessories, such as Apple’s MagSafe Charger, and more.
Users can update their Beats Headphones manually with an Android device within the Beats app.
