One of the longest-running holdouts of support for Apple Pay, along with Tap to Pay in general, has been America’s largest retailer Walmart.
The company today announced that both Walmart and Sam’s Club will getting support for Apple Pay as soon as next week. Previously, the only mobile payment option at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores was using its QR code-based Walmart Pay that is accessible through the Walmart app.
“Now, beginning Aug. 24, we will be adding Tap to Pay to our payment options at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations, with plans to roll it out to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and to fuel stations by mid-2027.”
The company did additionally confirm that expansion and support of Tap to Pay will include mobile payment options such as Apple Pay.
“Tap to Pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods. Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch.”
By bringing Apple Pay support to Walmart stores, it additionally means that those who pay with Apple Card from their iPhone or Apple Watch will get 2% in Daily Cash on each purchase.
Before this, the only Walmart stores that did accept Apple Pay were based in Canada.
