Apple’s smart home ambitions just got bigger. A new Bloomberg report claims the company is working on a full home security and monitoring service set to arrive in 2027, adding a subscription layer to the wave of Home hardware Apple already has planned.
A Bigger Home Push Already Underway
Apple is gearing up to overhaul its entire Home product lineup soon. A new Apple TV 4K, an updated HomePod mini, and a new home hub called HomePad all sit somewhere in the pipeline, expected to launch in the near future. That refresh alone would mark one of Apple’s biggest pushes into the smart home category in years.
Where the Security Service Fits In
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman describes a security camera and automation device Apple has planned for 2027, one built with privacy in mind. Rather than storing or relying on raw video footage, the device would use AI to monitor its surroundings directly. According to Gurman, that hardware will connect to something bigger: an entirely new home security and monitoring service built to support it.
That detail matters more than it might seem at first. Gurman has mentioned Apple’s interest in home security before, but this marks the clearest signal yet that the company plans to back its hardware with an ongoing paid service, not just a one-time device purchase.
Why This Could Matter for Apple’s Bottom Line
Home security and monitoring represents a massive market, and a subscription tied to it could give Apple’s services division a real boost. If Apple does roll out a paid tier for this kind of monitoring, bundling it into Apple One would make plenty of sense too, adding another reason for people to stick with Apple’s subscription ecosystem instead of switching to a competitor.
A dedicated service also signals something bigger about Apple’s intentions here. Building a whole monitoring platform around a security device suggests Apple wants to compete seriously in the smart home space, not dabble in it. If that’s the direction Apple is heading, this security sensor might just be the opening move in a much larger product lineup still to come.
