Apple confirmed something notable buried inside its iPhone Duo announcement this week: Apple Pencil support is coming, but only for one specific model. If you already own the Apple Pencil Pro, that $129 investment won’t do you any good here. Apple says the iPhone Duo only works with the cheaper $79 Apple Pencil that charges over USB-C.
The likely explanation comes down to hardware, not software restrictions. Apple Pencil Pro relies on a magnetic surface to charge, a setup iPads support but the iPhone Duo apparently doesn’t include. The USB-C Apple Pencil sidesteps that problem entirely, charging through a USB-C port tucked behind a small sliding cap instead of needing any magnetic contact point at all.
That compatibility comes with real trade-offs, though. The USB-C Apple Pencil skips several features found on the Pro version, including pressure sensitivity, double-tap gestures, barrel roll, haptic feedback, squeeze input, and Find My tracking. Tilt sensitivity is the one feature it does retain, which should still cover basic sketching and note-taking use cases even without the more advanced input options.
Despite those limitations, this still marks a genuine first for Apple’s phone lineup. No previous iPhone has ever supported Apple Pencil in any form, making the iPhone Duo the first to bring stylus input to the format at all. Apple also confirmed that once support arrives, the Pencil will work across both of the iPhone Duo’s displays, the inner foldable screen and the outer cover display alike.
There’s a catch on timing too. Apple Pencil support won’t be ready right when the iPhone Duo ships. Instead, Apple says the feature is coming sometime later this year, arriving after launch rather than alongside it.
As for when buyers can actually get their hands on the device itself, Apple set October 16 as the date pre-orders open, with the iPhone Duo officially launching on October 23.
