Searching an old WhatsApp thread used to mean three separate taps before you even got to type anything. That’s changing now. WABetaInfo confirms the app has started rolling out its in-chat search button on iOS after a few weeks sitting in beta.
The old method went like this: tap the contact name up top, dig through the chat info screen for the search option, then get bounced back into the conversation to finally enter what you were looking for. Nobody loved that flow. The new button cuts straight through it, letting you search from wherever you already are in the chat.
One thing changed between beta and this public rollout, though, and it’s the placement. Testers saw the button parked in the bottom-right corner. Now it lives up top instead, and only when you’re scrolled away from the newest messages. Scroll back down, it vanishes. Apple could take notes on that kind of restraint, honestly: a button that only shows up when you’d actually reach for it.
Tap it, and you’re immediately typing a search term inside that same conversation. No screen change, no reload, nothing unfamiliar either, since the actual search mechanics haven’t been touched. It’s the same search WhatsApp has had for years, just easier to reach now.
Group chats and channels get the same treatment as regular one-on-one conversations. Scroll up anywhere, and the button shows. Scroll back down, it’s gone.
One caveat worth mentioning: WhatsApp rollouts rarely hit everyone at once. Some people will see this tomorrow, others might wait weeks, and that’s just how the company tends to ship things.
