One of Apple’s stranger wearable projects just hit pause. As per the report from Bloomberg, Apple has paused work on a camera-equipped AI pin, a small wearable device meant to clip onto clothing or hang around the neck like a pendant.
The idea behind it sounds a lot like the rumored camera-equipped AirPods Apple has also been developing, expected as early as 2027. A built-in camera would feed information about whatever’s around the wearer straight to Siri, letting Siri AI answer questions about a location or identify whatever the person happens to be looking at, essentially bringing Visual Intelligence features to a device you wear rather than one you hold up and point.
Physically, the prototype apparently looked a lot like an AirTag, a thin, round disc built from aluminum and glass, small enough to genuinely pass as jewelry or a clothing accessory rather than obvious tech. It included one physical control button on the side, keeping the interface about as minimal as the hardware itself.
Rumors had pointed toward a possible 2027 launch for this exact device, but pausing development now makes that timeline look unlikely. There’s no indication yet whether Apple plans to revisit the project later or has shelved it for good.
Apple clearly isn’t stepping back from wearables as a category, though. The company is reportedly still working on several other projects at once, including a screen-free fitness band, AI-powered smart glasses, and those camera-equipped AirPods mentioned earlier. If anything, this pause looks less like Apple losing interest in wearable AI hardware and more like the company narrowing its focus toward whichever of these form factors actually makes the most sense to ship first.
