macOS High Sierra introduced last year was a minor update, focussing on new technologies like the Apple File System (APFS) for all-flash SSD Mac’s, Metal 2, HEVC & HEIF playback and many under the hood performance improvements. macOS High Sierra came with little changes and many bugs.

Apple is set to fix this with macOS Mojave. macOS Mojave is one of the most significant macOS Updates to date, featuring Dark Mode, Desktop Stacks, APFS for Fusion Drives and HDDs, four-new Mac apps and a brand-new Mac App Store.

Here is what to do before updating your Mac.

Check compatibility

Apple has tightened down on the compatibility for macOS Mojave. High Sierra required a Mac from 2009 onwards, but Mojave steps this up to Macs introduced in 2012 or later with a Metal-capable GPU.

– MacBook models introduced in early 2015 or later
– MacBook Air models introduced in mid-2012 or later
– MacBook Pro models introduced in mid-2012 or later
– Mac mini models introduced in late 2012 or later
– iMac models introduced in late 2012 or later
– iMac Pro (all models)
– Mac Pro models introduced in late 2013, plus mid-2010 or mid-2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics processor, including MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560 and Sapphire Radeon PULSE RX 580

If you have a Mac that falls short of these requirements, you’re out of luck to install Mojave officially.

Ensure you have enough storage

You need to free up storage space on your Mac, with at least 20GB of free space. You can watch this Apple Support video to see how:

Make a backup

With all software updates, backups are essential. You can use a Time Machine backup, which is a built-in backup tool in macOS High Sierra. You can learn more about Time Machine with these resources:

Getting macOS Mojave on release day

The exact release date for macOS Mojave has not been officially announced; however, we can expect it after the Apple “Gather Round” event on September 12.

Apple states “macOS Mojave will download conveniently in the background on Mac computers running the latest version of OS X El Capitan or later.”, Appleosophy recommends users update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and then update to macOS Mojave, as this will be a faster download, and will avoid any incompatibilities.

FAQ:

“Where can I download macOS Mojave?”

macOS Mojave will be available to download on the Mac App Store. Usually, a banner will appear on the “Featured” page and the “Updates” pane.
