Apple faced heavy criticism approximately a year ago when it revealed that firmware updates are deliberately slowing down the older generation iPhones to compensate for battery degradation over time. After this, the UK Competition and Markets Authority started an investigation. The CMA’s investigation focused on concerns that people were not warned that their phone’s performance could slow down following a software update to manage the power demands on batteries.
The CMA concluded the investigation Wednesday saying that Apple agreed to notify iPhone users if iOS updates will affect performance.
“To ensure compliance with consumer law Apple has formally agreed to improve the information it provides to people about the battery health of their phones and the impact performance management software may have on their phones,” the U.K. government said on its website.
In early 2018 it was observed that older generation iPhones particularly iPhone 6 and 6S had become very sluggish. This led Apple to explain that this was done deliberately to compensate for battery degradation over time.
Taking a look at a few class-action lawsuits, Apple agreed to release a $29 battery replacement program that will help users get a battery replacement at a discount.In a new battery health setting, Apple introduced a way to disable the performance compensation feature with iOS 11.3. Thus, if you want to disable the performance adjustment, you will be able to do that.
