We recently reported today that the Apple TV tvOS 13 beta 2 had added Picture-In-Picture as a new feature.

However, according to TechCrunch, it appears as though there is going to be a catch to be able to use the new Picture-In-Picture function. Essentially, it will only be allowed to be used through the Apple TV app and content that was purchased from Apple.

This means that if you bought a movie or TV show through iTunes/Apple, you will be able to get the Picture-In-Picture functionality on your Apple TV. If you are using a service like Netflix or Hulu, it will not work on there.

TV shows and movies that are streamed through Apple TV Channels and Apple TV+ (set to launch this fall) will be able to use the Picture-In-Picture functionality.

If you were to watch HBO’s Silicon Valley through Apple TV Channels, then you will get Picture-In-Picture support. If you want to watch it through the HBO NOW app, you will not get Picture-In-Picture support.

Picture-In-Picture is set to work on both the Apple TV HD and the Apple TV 4K.
