Last year, Google decided that it was time to get rid of YouTube TV’s option to subscribe to the service via Apple. However, those that still had it before the option was taken away on there were still allowed to subscribe to it from Apple.
Several months later, Google is going to be pulling the plug altogether and will be making it so that those who are subscribed to the service through Apple, will have until March 13, 2020, to get their account switched over to being billed directly through YouTube TV.
There has been an email sent out to customers that are still on their subscription through Apple that says the following:
“You’ll be billed for one final month of service and then your in-app purchase subscription will be canceled automatically on your billing date after March 13th, 2020.”
While Google and YouTube have not said why they are doing this, it could be because of the so-called “Apple tax” where Apple gets 15 percent of in-app purchases. YouTube TV did cost $54.99 a month when going through Apple, meaning that for each subscription, Apple was making about $8 per subscription. That is money that Google and YouTube TV would like to keep in its pocket.
That right there could also be the reason that YouTube TV costs $5 more to subscribe to when subscribed through Apple, as Google and YouTube TV’s way of getting some of its money back from the “Apple tax.”
The good news for customers that are subscribed through Apple is that if they decide to stick with YouTube TV as their live TV streaming service provider, then they will be able to say $5 a month by subscribing directly through YouTube TV, which adds to $60 saved in a year.
