The Best MacBooks for Students

Avatar for David Becker

The time to buy new laptops for high school and college students has begun. Stores like Best Buy are having a lot of sales on MacBooks at the moment, which means that this could be the time to start doing research as for what MacBook is best for you.

Apple now has a variety of choices in their MacBook line and with that said, here are what MacBooks are available, what they do, and which one is best for you as a student.

  • MacBook: This laptop was brought back in 2015 and is a good laptop depending on what you’re doing. Where this laptop excels is your simple school papers, web browsing, watching Netflix, and is incredibly portable. The processor, an Intel Core M processor, is still pretty basic, but it is a laptop designed for the people who just want the basics of macOS. Still, if you’re the student that is not doing much in college or not majoring in something that does not require you to use programs like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro, this is a good laptop.

  • MacBook Air: With the new standard being 8GB of RAM, this laptop is very good for college students that want to have a MacBook while at school. This is a big step up from the regular 12-inch MacBook because the MacBook Air has an Intel i5 processor. This means that along with the 8GB of RAM, this laptop can do work in Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere Pro. Just like the 12-inch MacBook, it is very portable. It is also one of the cheaper MacBooks on the market right now.

  • MacBook Pro: The MacBook Pro is a laptop for someone who is doing a lot of work all at once. It is also a laptop for someone who uses apps and programs that require a lot of power/RAM all at once. It will do just that and then some. The 2016 MacBook Pro has been criticized for lack of ports. The newest MacBook Pro only has USB-C and a headphone port. However, this does mean that they do not have USB, SD card, or Thunderbolt ports. Regardless, it is still a really good and nice looking laptop. As for the specs, it can get up to 16GB of RAM and have either an Intel i5 or i7 processor. Screen-wise, the laptop can be found in both 13 and 15-inch screen sizes.

    – Unlike the MacBook and MacBook Air, the 2016 MacBook Pro has a TouchBar that simply allows users to do quick tasks and access shortcuts that a user would not normally unless using said TouchBar. Apple does have a version of the 2016 MacBook Pro that does not have a TouchBar on it.

These MacBooks are some of the best that Apple has created in years (even if the new MacBook Pros only have USB-C ports) and plenty of potential for current high school students and new college students. MacBooks do cost a pretty penny, but for how well they work and how long they last is something that you cannot get on most Windows 10 laptops.

All I can say is that if you are in the market to buy a new MacBook this summer, be sure to sign for Best Buy College Student Deals, as well as shop Apple’s Education Store for the best deals on MacBooks.
