Apollo is a third-party app for Reddit and was created by a former Apple employee, Christian Selig. The app has been out for a little over a year and is well-known for its great and simplistic design.Â
Recently, the app got a new feature on it called “Apollo Ultra,” which will allow for users of Apollo, if they pay for the premium add-on, they will be able to get notifications, a first for the app, new themes, a new app icon each month (designed by The Iconfactory, developers of Twitterrific for iOS and Mac).
Apollo does have a premium version of the app costs money, which is called Apollo Pro. The Pro version of the app will cost you between $0.99, $2.99 or $4.99. It all depends on how much money you want to pay for it. I’m a college student, so when I got it last fall, I paid the $0.99 for it. Worth every penny. However, the app itself is free in the App Store.
Apollo Ultra costs either $0.99 a month, $9.99 a year or $19.99 for a lifetime subscription.
With all of that said, how is Apollo Ultra? As much as I do not agree with a subscription for an app for things like notifications and other features listed above, I do think that for this app, the price is worth it, but only if you get value out of it. For those who occasionally use the app, it is not for you.
As for my personal use with it, I like being able to finally get notifications from the app since it is something that I have wanted from it since day one. I also like being able to customize my theme on the app, and I hope that Selig is working on some sort of Christmas or holiday theme to the app since it will make the experience better for people like me who are obsessed with the holiday season.
Overall, it gets 3.5/4 stars from me because I believe that Apollo Ultra should be a cheaper premium add-on to the app, instead of having to pay $20 for a lifetime plan. I’m sorry, but that’s just too much for a single app.
Other than that, it is a great app and Apollo Ultra will definitely do the job for those who use the app often and want notifications.
Apollo is available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
