In a press release today, Apple announced that it acquired the classical music streaming service Primephonic.

The Cupertino-based giant says that the service will merge into Apple Music in addition to significantly improved classical music experience with playlists by Primephonic.

Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats said:

“We love and have a deep respect for classical music, and Primephonic has become a fan favorite for classical enthusiasts. Together, we’re bringing great new classical features to Apple Music, and in the near future, we’ll deliver a dedicated classical experience that will truly be the best in the world.”

Gordon P. Getty, a major shareholder of Primephonic said:

“Primephonic was founded to ensure that classical music will stay relevant for future generations. Primephonic and Apple together can realize that mission and take classical to a worldwide audience.”

The company says that Apple Music users will receive features for a better experience regarding classical music, which includes detailed displays of classical music metadata, and better browsing and search capabilities by composer and by repertoire, with new features coming soon.

Apple finally states that Primephonic will be discontinued on Tuesday, September 7 and a dedicated classical music app to launch next year.

If you are already a Primephonic subscriber, Apple will give you six months of Apple Music for free.
