Samsung Display is rumored to be developing new Under-Display Face ID technology for next year’s flagship iPhone lineup. A Korean blog, The Elec, was exclusively reported as per its sources. Initially, Samsung will be implementing this new technology on its Z-series Galaxy devices next year.
This year’s iPhone 14 lineup is expected to feature a pill and hole-shaped notch, which might be removed from next year onwards. The Under-Display Face ID would be hidden when not in use. This technology is the same as the one implemented under panel camera, or UPC, technology that Samsung Display has applied to the panels of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Samsung Display collaborated with Canada-based firm OTI Lumionics to develop its new under-panel camera technology, including a metal patterning layer that uses cathode mask materials.
OTI Lumionics’s patented technology uses “fine metal masks to deposit cathode patterning materials. An open metal mask is then used to deposit the cathode that avoids being deposited on the patterning material.”
Display supply chain analyst, Ross Young tweeted that the under panel IR for iPhones is not expected until 2024.
Earlier this year, another Elec report claimed that the China-based Apple supplier BOE is preparing to make LTPO OLED displays for next year’s iPhone 15 Pro. The report says that BOE is already gearing up to manufacture the iPhone 15 Pro screen.
We reconfirmed again that there is not expected to be under panel IR for iPhones until 2024, iPhone 16. Gotta start the development and start submitting samples now though.
