Apple has just announced its brand new products to the iPhone lineup at its ‘Far out’ event yesterday ”“ iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, taking technology to the next level. The iPhone 14 series feature an improved A15 Bionic chip with a 5-Core GPU, the same chip as the iPhone 13 Pro capable of handling up to 15.8 trillion operations in a second.
Here’s what you need to know about the iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus:
Display & Design:
The iPhone 14 comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Display with a 2532”‘by”‘1170-pixel resolution at 460 PPI. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus offer up to 800 nits of Brightness (typical) and the number bumps up to 1200 nits while watching HDR content. The Display on these new models also has Ceramic Sheild, introduced with the iPhone 12 Series in 2020. The iPhone 14 Plus offers the same design as the iPhone 14, but with a larger 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR Display with a resolution of 2778”‘by”‘1284-pixel resolution at 458 PPI, similar to the iPhone 14 Pro Max and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. Last year, Apple had reduced the size of the TrueDepth Camera System with the iPhone 13 series for users to enjoy more screen area. This has been carried over to these new devices as well. Both these newly announced iPhones have IP68 water resistance of a maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes.
The iPhone 14 mini has been discontinued by Apple due to low sales and has been replaced by the larger iPhone 14 Plus by popular demand.
Performance & Battery:
The iPhone 14 & the iPhone 14 Plus are powered by the performance beast, the A15 Bionic Chip with a 5-Core GPU, which is the same chip used to power the last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 13 is powered by the A15 Bionic Chip, but with a 4-core GPU so this is a slight improvement over last year’s iPhone in this price range. The 5nm A15 Bionic chip has a 6-Core CPU, out of which 2 are high-performance cores, and the other 4 are high-efficiency cores. It has nearly 15 billion transistors and can perform 15.8 trillion operations in a second. The iPhone 14 offers up to 20 Hours of Video Streaming, which is 1 Hour longer than its predecessor. The iPhone 14 Plus offers up to 26 hours of Video Streaming, which is 6 Hours longer than the regular-sized iPhone 14! Do note that actual Battery Life might vary depending upon the usage. Apple claims that both these iPhones are capable of All-Day Battery Life, along with the iPhone 14 Plus having its “Longest Battery Life ever”.
Camera:
The iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus offer a Diagonal Dual Camera System, with a Wide and an Ultra-Wide lens. The new 12 MP 26mm Wide Camera now has a 1.9μm sensor, enabling photo and video improvements in all lighting scenarios for better detail and motion freezing, less noise, faster exposure times, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. The wide camera now has an even larger f/1.5 aperture, making it the biggest sensor Apple has ever put in a dual-camera system. Apple has bumped up the resolution of Cinematic Mode recording to 4K HDR for up to 30 fps. Apple has included an option for 24 fps as well for filmmakers. This is a huge upgrade from last year’s iPhone 13, where it only supported Cinematic Mode for up to 1080p at 30fps. The Ultra Wide camera, offers a unique perspective for wider shots and improvements to low-light photos with Photonic Engine. The improved True Tone flash is 10 percent brighter and has better uniformity for more consistent lighting. Apple claims that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can perform up to 2x better in low light situations.
According to Apple, “iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus introduce a new standard for photo and video capture with a new 12MP Main camera featuring a larger sensor and larger pixels, a new front TrueDepth camera, the Ultra Wide camera to capture more of a scene, and Photonic Engine for a giant leap in low-light performance. Through a deep integration of hardware and software, Photonic Engine improves mid- to low-light performance for photos across all cameras: up to 2x on the Ultra Wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and an impressive 2.5x on the new Main camera. Photonic Engine enables this dramatic increase in quality by applying the computational benefits of Deep Fusion earlier in the imaging process to deliver extraordinary detail, and preserve subtle textures, provide better color, and maintain more information in a photo.”
Apple also introduced “Action Mode” for an incredibly smooth-looking video that adjusts to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations, even when video is being captured in the middle of the action. Action mode supports up to 2.8K at 60 fps.
The new front TrueDepth camera with an Æ’/1.9 aperture enables better low-light performance for photos and videos and features autofocus, so it can focus even faster in low light conditions and has the ability to capture group shots from farther away.
Connectivity:
The iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus offer superfast 5G Connectivity with mmWave Technology (mmWave only in select regions). It offers 25 sub”‘6 GHz bands and 3 mmWave bands on the U.S Models because of the customized hardware design. The previous iPhone 13 offered 21Â sub”‘6 GHz bands, so the additional 4 bands will help in even better & wider 5G Coverage throughout the globe. The iPhone 14 series will also feature “Smart Data Mode” which will switch between 5G and 4G/LTE to preserve battery life. iPhone will automatically switch to the 5G Network when required.
Apple has also Emergency SOS over Satellite with the iPhone 14 series, allowing users to make emergency calls and text over Satellite. This way, users will be able to contact emergency services and send texts even if there’s no cellular coverage. This will be useful for people who stay or travel to areas with low/no cellular coverage. This feature will be available to users in the U.S. and Canada only and will be available in November with a software update to iOS 16.
U.S. Models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be available without a physical sim tray and will run on Dual eSIM.
There are two advantages of this new change:
- Better Water Resistance: Fewer Open spaces on the iPhone will lead to better Water Resistance as there will be lower chances of Liquid seeping into your iPhone.
- Protection: If the iPhone ever gets lost or stolen, the eSIM cannot be removed, whereas the Physical Sim can be removed.

Environment:
Apple claims that the iPhone 14 has been designed to minimize its impact on the environment, including antenna lines that now use upcycled plastic water bottles, chemically transformed into a stronger, high-performance material. The iPhone 13 series uses 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in magnets like the ones used in MagSafe, 100 percent recycled tungsten in the Taptic Engine, 100 percent recycled tin in the solder of multiple printed circuit boards. Both models also use 100 percent recycled gold in the plating of multiple printed circuit boards and in the wire in the front camera and rear cameras. Apple has also eliminated the outer plastic wrap and redesigned the packaging, ultimately bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely removing plastic from all packaging by 2025.
The iPhone 14 series is a step forward in terms of mobile technology and Apple will continue to improve its iPhone lineup every year.
