Japanese Railway West to get support for ICOCA transit and payment cards in Wallet app this year

Avatar for David Becker

Japan residents will be able to add their Japanese Railway West (JR West) ICOCA transit and payment card to the Wallet app on their iPhone in the near future, according to NFC World (NFCW).

By enabling this, it will allow those users to pay for fares and use their transit cards with a simple tap from their iPhone or Apple Watch.

NFCW reported that users will be able to make payments from local merchants with the card as long as said merchants accept ICOCA cards for payments.

JR West has said, “The IC card ticket ICOCA will be compatible with Apple Pay in 2023…ICOCA’s service, which allows you to pay for transportation and shopping simply by touching your mobile device to the card reader, will be available with Apple Pay on your iPhone or Apple Watch.”

JR West stated that they will inform customers on the launch date “at a later date.”
