The standard iPhone 12 models were the last ones to have the vertical lens arrangement for both the Ultra Wide and Main Camera before Apple moved to the diagonal arrangement starting with the iPhone 13 models.
Now, we’re getting leaks from Majin Bu on X that allegedly show the camera chassis for the upcoming standard iPhone 16 models. Based on that image, it looks like Apple will be reverting to the vertical arrangement that was last used on the iPhone 12 models.
Why would Apple do so? If we take a look at the iPhone 15 Pro models, they support recording Spatial Video for you to watch on the recently launched Vision Pro. This is achieved by having both the Ultra Wide and Main Cameras aligned vertically to record the depth information. Therefore, it will be necessary for Apple to use a similar camera arrangement for the upcoming base iPhone 16 models as it’s expected that Spatial Video recording will be standard across the entire iPhone 16 lineup for this coming fall.
The iPhone 16 models are also expected to inherit the Action button from the iPhone 15 Pro models, and it will bring a dedicated Capture button, which will take photography to the next level.
