The AirPods Max was first introduced in December 2020; however, it hasn’t seen an update since then. If you’re waiting for the next generation, it may not be as big of an upgrade as you might think. According to a Weibo user “Instant Digital,” they claim that the only notable new feature for the second-generation AirPods Max will be the inclusion of a USB-C port in place of the Lightning connector for charging and wired audio listening. We’ve seen Apple replacing the Lightning port with the USB-C port on its Siri Remote, all iPad models, and most notably, the iPhone 15 models.

With that said, because the next iteration of AirPods Max may have USB-C connectivity as its only new feature, it will still feature the already old H1 chip. Therefore, it will still miss out on all the Adaptive Audio features that AirPods Pro 2 has introduced, including Adaptive Noise Control, Personalized Volume, and Conversation Awareness. Those features require an H2 chip, and the AirPods Pro 2 is the only AirPods model that has that silicon.

Therefore, the AirPods Pro 2 may still be the most “superior” model in the AirPods lineup in terms of the number of features it offers for the foreseeable future as the AirPods Max continues to serve a more niche audience of users. Other rumors point to a new color lineup for the next AirPods Max, but nothing else. The next iteration of the Max is expected to launch in late 2024 along with the fourth generation of the standard AirPods.
