The Apple Watch Ultra was added to the Apple Watch lineup in September 2022, and it received its first iterative update last September. One of the biggest enhancements that we’re expecting for a future Ultra is the more advanced Micro-LED display. However, it seems that Apple’s goals for that project have been “on hold” for further development.
As noted by MacRumors, Counterpoint Research’s Display Supply Chain Consultants reported that low production yields and higher expenses likely lead to the cancellation of the project. Currently, the OLED display on the Ultra 2 can go up to 3,000 nits of brightness when viewing outdoors, which is a +1,000 unit improvement over the original model.
Vision Pro has pioneered Micro-LED panels into the displays, and the benefits of that technology are increased overall brightness, better contrast ratios, and lower power consumption. Bringing Micro-LED to that Ultra would greatly benefit the Ultra for more extensive battery life and usage in the harshest sunlight. The next-generation Ultra with that technology was expected to come out in 2025 or 2026; however, it could take longer now that the project has been on pause.
