For the first time, the iPad Air comes in two sizes – an 11-inch model and a larger 13-inch* model. With both sizes mainly sharing the same hardware and specs, there are a few differences that made the 13-inch model stand out. Besides the landscape stereo speakers that output 2x the bass, the larger 13-inch iPad Air features a display that’s 20% brighter than the one found in the 11-inch iPad Air.

The 11-inch display maxes out at 500 nits of brightness, while the 13-inch maxes out at 600. That’s for SDR content only, so HDR content is not applicable since both iPad Air models feature the Liquid Retina display (LCD). Only the iPad Pros with the new Ultra Retina Displays can output XDR peak brightness of up to 1600 nits for HDR content.

You may not know this, but the 13-inch iPad Air uses the same display panel that was found in the 2018 13-inch iPad Pro as they both share the LCD technology, the same resolution (2732 x 2048), 600 nits of max brightness, Wide color (P3), and TrueTone. The one feature that’s missing on the 13-inch Air is ProMotion technology as Apple can disable it on both the hardware/software side, leaving it exclusive to only the Pro models.
