We recently heard news that Apple has put development towards the second-generation Vision Pro on hold to focus on developing a new and more affordable Vision model.
The Vision Pro currently costs $3,499 (USD) and comes with 256GB of storage. That price is out of reach for many people, and with the recent launch of the Vision Pro in Singapore, China, and Japan, it remains to be seen whether folks in those countries would truly invest in such a marvel piece of technology.
With that said, Apple is looking for ways to bring the entry price down to reach customers who may consider trying Apple’s approach to spatial computing. The company is exploring larger OLED-on-Silicon panels that would be larger than the ones found in the Vision Pro, but have less resolution and thus a lower PPI (pixels per inch). Sony currently supplies OLED panels for the Vision Pro featuring a 1.42-inch screen with a pixel density of almost 3,400 PPI; however, with a limited production capacity of at most 900,000 panels per year, this prompted Apple to look for other suppliers, and two likely candidates would be Samsung and LG display.
One compromise that we can also expect for the new, budget-friendly Vision model is the need to tether to an iPhone or Mac for usability. This would save costs on having a dedicated processor built into the headset, but rather use the processor found in a tethered device. We can expect this lower-cost Vision headset to launch as soon as late next year.
