With the anticipated introduction of both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in about two months, we’ve got a report that Apple is looking to adopt more advanced OLED panels for its upcoming flagship smartphones.

According to ETNews, Samsung is preparing to mass produce its “M14” OLED panels in the second half of 2024, and we just entered into this semester. Apple and Google will be two of its first customers to adopt those panels. To break this down for you, “M14” refers that those OLED panels are designed for flagship smartphones and the number of high-performance materials used to produce those panels.

A previous claim has corroborated this report that the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro’s displays will feature up to 1,200 nits of typical SDR brightness and up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness. The current iPhone 15 Pro’s displays max out at 1,000 nits and 1,600 nits of SDR and HDR brightness, respectively. We could also see improved energy efficiencies for those display panels, which allow them to extend battery life and run a bit cooler at higher brightness levels, especially with Pro-exclusive features such as ProMotion and always-on capability.

Finally, we’re expecting both iPhone 16 Pro models to have larger display sizes than their predecessors at 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays.

Both iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to be announced sometime in September alongside the public release of iOS 18 shortly after.
