Apple now makes the Apple Pencil (USB-C) available at its Certified Refurbished Stores in both U.S. and Canada retailing at $69 (USD) and $89 (CAD), down from their respective MSRPs at $79 (USD) and $109 (CAD). Earlier this week, Apple made this accessory available in the Certified Refurbished Store across several European countries.

Last October, Apple quietly introduced a new model in the Apple Pencil lineup and released it the following month. Officially dubbed “Apple Pencil (USB-C)”, this is the new entry-level model that pairs and charges using a USB-C cable. Thus, it’s compatible with all iPad models with a USB-C port listed below as long as they’re running iOS 17.1 or later:

  • iPad mini (6th generation)
  • iPad (10th generation)
  • iPad Air (4th and 5th generation)
  • iPad Air (M2)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st to 4th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd to 6th generation)
  • iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)

Because this Pencil magnetically attaches to the side of the iPad, it’s also the perfect companion to the iPad (10th generation) since that model doesn’t support the Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and the pairing/charging solution is less clunky than that of the original Apple Pencil thanks to the built-in USB-C port along with the included cable. Plus, the sliding cap on the Pencil is an improvement over the removable cap found on the original Apple Pencil where you could easily lose it.

The two features missing on this Pencil are Double Tap and pressure sensitivity; however, they still retain tilt functionality and Apple Pencil hover for iPads with an M2 or later chip. So for a Pencil that’s under $100, this is a great option for those who are looking for a tool that lets them jot down and handwrite notes, especially with the upcoming Math Notes in iPadOS 18. It’s also the most compatible option that works with many of the iPads that Apple introduced. So if you still use an older iPad Pro and see yourself upgrading to the latest iPad Pro in the future, for instance, you won’t have to worry about buying another Pencil.

As with other refurbished products from Apple, this Pencil undergoes thorough testing, cleaning, and repackaging to provide the same quality as with other new Apple products. They also include the same 14-day return period and one-year limited warranty as with new Apple products.
