Apple TV+ to introduced ad-supported plan to compete with other streaming services

This year marks the fifth anniversary since Apple TV+ first launched. Originally made its debut in the fall of 2019, Apple’s premium streaming service for its original movies and series initially started at $4.99/month or $49.99/year. However, as Apple added more content to TV+, the service saw a significant price hike to $6.99/month in 2022 and again shortly after to $9.99/month the following year.

What makes Apple Music and TV+ stand out from its competitors is the omission of ad-supported plans; in other words, all existing plans from Apple’s services offer an ad-free experience when listening to or watching music, TV shows, or movies. On the other hand, competitors such as Netflix and Disney+ have seen price hikes over the past few years, so as a cheaper alternative, they offer ad-supported plans at much lower prices. With that said, according to The Telegraph, Apple is also looking to follow suit with its competitors by introducing an ad-supported plan for the very first time. This seems like an unprecedented move from Apple, but if you think about it, there are some people who just want a basic plan without all the bells and whistles of the more premium plans, or they just won’t mind watching ads.

Introducing an ad-supported plan at around the initial monthly subscription price of $4.99/month could entice even more people to enjoy all the new original content that Apple TV+ has to offer, especially those who won’t want to spend too much on any streaming service.
