Foldable devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip have been maturing quite well as technology improves, and this may be a product category that Apple could invest in. The company has been developing its foldable concepts for a while now, even those as large as a MacBook. Reputable analyst Jeff Pu reported back in May that Apple’s first foldable devices would kickstart mass production sometime in the next two or three years. He expected that Apple would likely launch a larger foldable iPad- or MacBook-like device within that timeframe and then ship a “foldable” iPhone afterward.
However, the analyst now reports that Apple’s first foldable device may see a delay in mass production. Apple has been focused on other more ambitious projects, especially with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence that is expected to launch later this fall as a beta. So development for foldable devices may be on hold. In addition, foldable display technology is still relatively in its infancy.
If you take a look at some other foldable phones, one major issue with those displays is the noticeable crease, which may affect the legibility in text. Plus, foldable displays are susceptible to scratches, which are less durable than the Ceramic Shield displays that iPhones are known for. With that said, Apple may wait a bit longer until technology for foldable devices improves as Apple always wants to make the best product even when the company won’t be the first in that area.
