When you’re watching a video in Picture-in-Picture mode or listening to a music track, podcast, or audiobook, and you open up the Camera app on your iPhone to start recording video. You may have realized that the audio playback would automatically pause as you’re shooting your latest moment in life.

Some customers may find this to be somewhat frustrating, and one workaround is to use the QuickTake feature in Photo mode. However, it comes with a compromise in video quality, which would be inferior to the quality of the regular videos recorded via Video mode. With that in mind, it looks like this issue will be remedied soon because iOS 18 will allow you to still play audio on your iPhone when you shoot video. This can be done via a toggle control in the Settings app.

When you go to the Camera section in the Settings app, you’ll see the Allow Audio Playback toggle in the Record Sound panel. It’s also worth noting that “when playing audio using the iPhone speaker, audio will be recorded in mono.” Modern iPhones have always been capable of stereo recording in Video Mode, but this limitation won’t matter that muchto users.

iOS 18 is available as a public beta for users, and we expect the public release to debut in the fall, bringing several improvements to the iOS experience such as Messages, Photos, and Notes.
