Last but not least, as a bonus part of Mark Gurman’s extensive report, he declares that Apple is also considering adding its future in-house 5G modem to a later generation of the Vision Pro, which will further expand the flexibility of using the spatial computer while staying connected to access several online features.
The Apple Vision Pro was introduced as a sneak peek at WWDC 2023, and it initially launched in the United States in February 2024. Throughout the year, it later became available in even more countries such as Singapore and Japan. Apple just released visionOS 2 as the next major software release for the Vision Pro. However, despite more apps, games, and Immersive Video content coming to Vision Pro, the spatial platform really hasn’t taken off. Apple even abruptly reduced production of the said device recently. But that doesn’t stop Apple from exploring more concepts for the Vision Pro as it’s been reported that Apple is developing a second-generation Vision Pro as early as 2025 with the upcoming M5 chip. A recent report indicated that the M5 would come sometime in the second half of next year, so that report could line up with Apple’s release schedule if everything goes well. However, there have been several conflicting rumors that Apple may suspend development towards that device to focus development on a more affordable headset, which Gurman believes could come out sometime next year.
Even though it remains to be seen whether a future Vision headset would get cellular connectivity as an option, it would pave the way for using spatial computing outdoors. Let’s just hope customers won’t lose their awareness when playing spatial games as if they were playing Pokémon Go on their smartphones. With all kidding aside, Apple’s future for its cellular-enabled products appears to be brighter than ever with so much potential in cellular technology.
