Apple developing upcoming Studio Display 2

As part of the several code references that Apple unintentionally leaked, it appears that Apple has already been developing the second generation of its mainstream Studio Display. Codenamed J427, it’s reported to feature the upcoming A19 Pro chip; this will be the same chip that will power the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro. There will be two variants of that chip: one with a 5-core GPU for the iPhone 17 Air and a 6-core GPU for the iPhone 17 Pro. It’s not clear which variant will be used for the upcoming Studio Display, but Apple could go with the full-fledged variant to perhaps maximize graphics performance.

The current Studio Display was introduced alongside the first Mac Studio on March 2022. It serves as the ideal companion for the Mac Studio, which packs Max- and Ultra-level performance in super-compact form factor. The Studio Display currently packs in the A13 Bionic chip – the same chip that’s used in the iPhone 11 series and the iPhone SE (2nd generation). Studio Display takes display integration to the next level with a large 27-inch Retina 5K display, 12MP Center Stage Camera, and built-in six speakers, microphones, and USB-C ports, and it works beautifully with iPad Air, iPad Pro, and Mac, especially the Mac mini and Mac Studio.

The leaked code also references another codename J527. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman previously rumored that Apple could be working on two variants of the Studio Display, so a second model could be a possibility? Rumors regarding the upcoming Studio Display have been very quiet, so details remain unclear. The next Studio Display could feature mini-LED backlighting since that display technology has been used on modern MacBook Pro models. Either way, it’s possible that we’ll see this upcoming Studio Display alongside the first M5-based Macs. Rumors have pointed that the release for the M5 MacBook Pros could be pushed to as soon as early 2026, so it won’t be too long for us to find out.
