In the fast-paced world of AI, talent is everything. That’s why the latest news from Meta poaching yet another top executive from Apple is turning heads. Frank Chu, who played a key role in Apple’s AI initiatives, will now take on a new role at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This move comes even as Meta signals a slowdown in its aggressive hiring spree.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Chu is set to join Meta after leading key AI teams at Apple. This isn’t an isolated incident. Chu is at least the sixth Apple AI expert to jump ship to Meta in recent months. The wave of departures began in July, when Ruoming Pang—who established Apple’s AI models team—accepted an offer reportedly worth $200 million from Meta. Since then, engineers like Tom Gunter, Mark Lee, Bowen Zhang, and Yun Zhu have followed suit.

Chu managed AI teams that focused on cloud infrastructure, model training, and search capabilities. Cloud infrastructure serves as the backbone that enables AI systems to run massive computations without overwhelming user devices. Chu managed the operation of large language models on Apple’s servers. Interestingly, this hire comes as Meta dials back its recruitment frenzy. After months of heavy spending to snag top talent, the company is shifting gears—perhaps to focus on integrating its new stars and delivering results.

Over at Meta, Chu will slot into a fresh team called MSL Infra, dedicated to AI infrastructure. This fits right into Meta’s recent reorganization, where the AI division was split into four sections, led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI. Meta has poured billions into building its Superintelligence group, aiming to compete in the AI race.
