Apple could soon bring back a familiar accessory from its past for its upcoming iPhone. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s post on X, the company has explored a new case design for its upcoming slimmer model. This case would protect the device’s edges while leaving the back uncovered, much like the bumpers introduced for the iPhone 4 over a decade ago.

The original iPhone 4 bumpers debuted in 2010 amid the “Antennagate” controversy, where signal issues arose from holding the device a certain way. To address customer complaints about dropped calls due to the phone’s external antenna design, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that the company would provide free bumper cases to all iPhone 4 owners. These simple silicone or rubber frames wrap around the phone’s sides, providing grip and protection without concealing the sleek glass back.

Gurman’s report ties into Apple’s three-year strategy to reinvent the iPhone. The plan kicks off in September with the iPhone 17 Pro and the slimmer iPhone 17 Air. Following that, a foldable iPhone is slated for release next year. The roadmap culminates in a special 20th anniversary iPhone model, though details remain scarce. This sequence of innovations aims to inject fresh appeal into the iPhone, which has seen incremental updates in recent years.
