According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple is “betting heavily” on a new, smarter Siri that will be powered by Google’s Gemini AI. This move signals a major strategy shift for Apple as it races to catch up in the generative AI space. For years, Siri has lagged behind competitors, but this partnership could finally give the assistant the advanced capabilities users have been waiting for.
Apple isn’t just plugging into Google’s public Gemini service. Instead, Apple is reportedly paying Google to create a custom Gemini-based model designed specifically for its needs. This specialized AI would run on Apple’s own secure “Private Cloud Compute” servers, which aligns with the company’s long-standing focus on user privacy.
The goal is to finally give Siri the intelligence to handle features that modern users expect, such as a sophisticated, AI-powered web search and more complex, conversational interactions. This decision apparently wasn’t made lightly. Gurman reports that Apple held a “bake-off” earlier this year to decide on an AI partner, weighing Google against another top contender, Anthropic.
Interestingly, Apple executives reportedly determined that Anthropic’s model was superior from a pure technology standpoint. However, Google ultimately won the deal because it “made more sense financially.” This is likely due, in part, to the massive, pre-existing search relationship the two tech giants already have.
If you’re worried this means your iPhone is about to be flooded with Google services or that Siri will just become a clone of Google Assistant, you can relax. Gurman clarifies that we shouldn’t expect to see Gemini features already found on Android devices. The experience will be “all with an Apple user interface.” In short, it will still look and feel like Siri, but (hopefully) it will just be a whole lot smarter.
