The iPhone Air has been out for almost two months, and it finally hit stores in China after a slight delay. Although tech enthusiasts have lauded the iPhone Air’s all-new thin design (some even kept it as their primary phone), the iPhone Air has not been selling well compared to the other latest flagship iPhone models like the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. In fact, Apple even cut production of the said model by up to 80%. Although the iPhone Air is ahead in terms of innovation and design, it does have some limitations.

One of the biggest cons of the iPhone Air is that it just has one rear camera. Despite its uncertainty in both the lineup and the future, it looks like Apple is still planning on a second-generation model for that smartphone. According to the Weibo-based account “Digital Chat Station”, Apple is working on adding rear camera for the next iPhone Air. Theoretically, the second-generation iPhone Air would have both a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, so the camera setup would be similar to that of the base iPhone 17.

However, given the plateau’s area, which houses most of the components to make room for a larger battery, the camera setup may be horizontal instead of vertical like on the iPhone 17. This means that the next iPhone Air could still lack Spatial Video recording. This feature was introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro, and it’s only made possible when the Main (Wide) and the Ultra Wide cameras are aligned vertically. So that’s something to keep in mind.

Ming-Chi Kuo expects the next iPhone Air to launch next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models and the highly anticipated foldable “iPhone Fold” or “iPhone Ultra.” Afterwards in fall 2027, Apple could launch the third-generation iPhone Air could feature an even larger screen.

Although the iPhone Air is in its first generation with several compromises, it is still Apple’s most forward-thinking iPhone in years; you may read this article to learn why.
