Thanksgiving weekend is upon us and there will be a mad frenzy of people who are going to be streaming a lot of sporting events live for the holiday.
Right now there are expected to be three college football games this weekend available to stream live in 4K this weekend.
Here are the following games (all games take place on Saturday, November 29):
- Ohio State vs. Michigan: 12 p.m. ET on FOX
- Cincinnati vs. TCU: 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX
- Alabama vs. Auburn: 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN
As for how you can stream them, the two games on FOX will be available to stream in 4K via the FOX Sports app. You will need to sign-in with valid TV provider credentials in order to get access to the 4K stream.
Some live TV streaming services like FuboTV, Sling TV (on the Sling Blue plan), and YouTube TV do provide access to the official FOX 4K channel for sporting events like this. However, those with YouTube TV would have to pay the additional $9.99 a month for its 4K Plus add-on.
Another way to stream the FOX games in 4K will be through the FOX One streaming service.
Lastly, we have the game on ESPN 4K. The game itself will be on regular ABC stations and affiliates and being broadcast in HD. However, users that have YouTube TV, Sling TV, and other services will get access to the 4K stream of that game directly in their respective apps and websites.
For the FOX and ESPN college football games, all of these will be in upscaled from 1080p HD to UHD 4K.
TVAnswersman.com explains this perfectly:
“Upscaling is the process when one video format is converted to another. Fox takes the 1080p HDR signal and converts it to a 4K format. Upscaling 4K is not considered as good as native 4K, but the inclusion of HDR can offer heightened colors and vividness. ESPN also upscaled its 4K broadcasts from a 1080p HD signal.”
Please note that you will not only need a 4K UHD TV, but additionally a 4K compatible streaming device like the Apple TV 4K.
