The global smartphone industry is currently navigating what experts call “a crisis like no other.” According to the latest data from IDC (via Bloomberg), the market is set to contract by a staggering 12.9% in 2026. While this news sounds dire for the industry at large, the story for Apple is quite different. As budget brands struggle to keep their heads above water, the iPhone’s premium positioning might actually turn this crisis into a competitive masterstroke.
The heart of the problem lies in the skyrocketing demand for advanced memory to power Artificial Intelligence. Tech giants are funneling global supplies of DRAM and NAND chips into massive AI data centers. This has left smartphone manufacturers fighting over the “scraps,” causing component prices to triple in some cases. IDC has dramatically revised its forecasts, now expecting only 1.1 billion shipments this year.
The crisis is hitting budget-friendly Android manufacturers the hardest. Brands like Xiaomi and Oppo, which rely on moving high volumes of entry-level devices with thin profit margins, are in a difficult spot. Because memory now accounts for a significantly larger share of their material costs, their business models are under threat. IDC reports that the sub-$100 segment is becoming “permanently uneconomical” to maintain. We are already seeing some manufacturers reining in hardware specs or eliminating budget models entirely to stay afloat.
Fortunately, the Cupertino giant is uniquely positioned to navigate these choppy waters. Apple’s focus on the premium market means it has much higher profit margins to absorb rising costs without necessarily passing them all to the consumer. Furthermore, iPhone’s supply chain management gives it an edge. With long-term, fixed-price contracts and massive cash reserves, Apple can secure iPhone’s chip inventory 12 to 24 months in advance. While competitors are scrambling for availability, Apple is likely to maintain a steady flow of iPhone 18 production.
